The New Normal: Complexity and Resilience

In this episode of Cybersecurity (Marketing) Unplugged, Wyatt also discusses:

  • How enterprises and educational institutions have adapted to the new normal;
  • The importance of building security technology into the hardware of devices;
  • The social impact of the pandemic;
  • And the cybersecurity literacy and skills gap

Christy Wyatt is president and CEO of Absolute, the leader in endpoint resilience. Under her leadership, Absolute was recognized as one of the ‘Top Ten Cybersecurity Companies to Watch in 2020’ by Forbes. Wyatt has deep experience and expertise spanning cybersecurity, enterprise mobility, embedded platforms, IoT, enterprise software and data science. She was named as one of the Top 100 Women in Cybersecurity for 2020, and one of the Top 50 Women Leaders in SaaS in 2019.

The operating environment has shifted to what many have been calling the ‘new normal’ – a state that threatens to persist far beyond any end in sight. This state of affairs is characterized by an acceleration in complexity that calls for an equal increase in resiliency. As we’ve seen with the recent SolarWinds and other major cyberattacks, attack is inevitable and thus planning for and healing from an attack is key.

When asked about the advice she would give to CISOs for strengthening data and device security, Wyatt responded:

There is no perfect cyber program, no matter how well funded or well trained. Controls will fail, accidents will happen, misconfigurations will happen, applications will crash. These things are just a reality. So when we think about winning strategies coming into this next era, [a] multilayered approach is really critical. Making sure that you’re looking at security of the device, the applications, the data.
